Friendship With The World- Introduction (Part 1)

“You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.” – James 4:4 Do you know why the Roman emperor Nero persecuted Christians?  Long story short, there was an accidental fire that burned down much of Rome and the people wanted someone to blame.  Nero picked the Christians to blame, but he didn’t pick them because they believed in Jesus.  He picked them because their Christian convictions caused them to reject much of the main stream of Roman culture. ...

What are God’s Goals for our Children? -Part 2

Jesus said, “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet forfeit his soul?”  Jesus’ logic here is phenomenal.  If we don’t have Jesus (even though we may have everything else) we have nothing in the end.  This is just as true for our children and should therefore give us a heavenly focus as parents.  Our children can become the most popular, wealthy, successful people, and yet, at the same time, completely forfeit eternal life in God’s Kingdom.  What are your goals for your children?  Is it the goals of this world, or the goals of God’s Kingdom?   The goal of God’s Kingdom is...

What are God’s Goals for our Children? -Part 1

Goals are important, not only to have, but also to examine.  Our goals reveal to us our priorities.  They show us what we are focused upon. Many parents today, when asked about their children’s future, respond by saying something like this: “I just want them to make good grades and stay out of trouble.”  Or, “I just want them to be happy.”  Or, “I want them to be successful.”  Although these goals are well-intended and have a level of importance, they fall very short of God’s goals for our children.  It very possible for our kids to make straight A’s and stay out of trouble, and at the same...

Training up our Children

Training up our Children

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. – Proverbs 22:6 What does it mean to ‘train up’ our children?  As in all things, definitions are important.  We can surround ourselves with all of the correct words and phrases, and yet, if they aren’t defined correctly we can still miss God’s will. For many people today, training up their children is simply a matter of their children being at the right place at the right time.  Church, Sunday School, Youth Group, Awana, and other activities have become the litmus test as to whether or not I am training...

What will you be doing 500 years from now?

The Bible tells us to be in the world, but not of the world.  God doesn’t call us to escape the world geographically.  He calls us to a different mindset.  God wants our heart to not be aligned with this world, but rather with His Kingdom. Needless to say, this isn’t always easy.  We live in a culture that is very demanding.  Everything wants our time, money, participation, and heart.  Behind it all is the enemy, trying to get us to conform to his ways, his agenda, and his kingdom.  So how do we win?  How do we stay true to God by not conforming to this world?   There are many good answers...

One Year without Redbox

One Year without Redbox

When Amy and I first married we decided not to have T.V. or cable due to certain convictions. I did not like all the sinful content in the programing. Amy’s parents, during her junior year of high school, decided to get rid of it to use the money towards a better avenue: a mission’s family. This made a lasting impression. But we loved to buy movies and get a movie from blockbuster often. Then the economical ‘Redbox’ came out. In May of 2013 my wife and I decided to sell our DVDs and to fast for one year from Redbox.  For us, this meant giving up movies/t.v. altogether.  Since we didn’t have...
